What Does It Mean to Be Saved?
Many times when people hear Christians use the term "saved", it begs the question, "saved from what". To be Scripturally saved means to be saved from the penalty and power of our sin. We have all broken God's Holy Law and sinned against Him. God in His just holiness must punish sin. This is a problem considering that all of us have sinned and come short of His perfect standard (Romans 3:10-23). It's also problematic because good works can never erase broken laws. However, God is so loving that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to satisfy His justice on our behalf. Christ is the second person of the Godhead. He entered into His own creation through the womb of the virgin Mary. As the God-man, He lived the sinless life that we could never live. He died the death that we deserve on the cross, wearing our sins in His body on the tree (I Peter 2:24, II Corinthians 5:21). God the Father poured out His wrath upon His Son for our sin (Isaiah 53). Christ rose from the dead three days later in order to prove complete victory over sin, death and hell. You can be saved by simply trusting in the person and finished work of Christ (Romans 10:9-13). There is no way to satisfy the just demands of God outside of Christ. One must repent of their dead works and trust in Christ in order to be saved. (Mark 1:15, John 14:6).
